By taking down websites that enable users to express themselves freely, the administration of Joe Biden is working to stifle dissenting opinions on its policies. Censoring material and restricting access to information are two of the measures the administration is taking in an effort to counteract what it refers to as “hate speech.”

Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State for the United States of America, gave a recent speech concerning the current situation of the internet at the Summit for Democracy 2023. He was the first to recognize that the internet is getting “more restricted, more un-secure, and more compartmentalized by the day.” Blinken also recognized that the “Deep State” in Washington, D.C. is making significant efforts to combat “resilience to deception and misinformation.” Question is, WHO is doing the actual Misinformation?.

The Increasing Use of Censorship on the Internet

During the Summit for Democracy, Blinken issued a warning about the growing trend of governments erecting firewalls and banning access to the internet in order to control speech, repress dissent, and promote misinformation and disinformation. While he attempted to argue that the United States is dedicated to establishing an “open network of networks that respects democratic ideals and human rights,” the reality is that this goal can only be accomplished by silencing voices that are critical of the government.

The Campaign to Combat Misinformation and Disinformation Carried Out by the Biden Administration

Blinken presented the Declaration for the Future of the Internet, a declaration containing the commitments of sixty countries to fight against disinformation and misrepresentation on the Internet. On the other hand, this runs counter to everything he has said previously regarding the censoring practices of other nations. He asserted that it is imperative for the United States to strike a “delicate balance” between “openness and security,” “protecting expression and avoiding incitement,” and “fostering innovation and restraining the dominance of Big Tech.” He then threatened technological platforms that did not comply with the requirements imposed by the Biden administration for more “openness and security.”

A Danger to People’s Right to Speak Their Minds

Just a few days had passed since the RESTRICT Act had been proposed by two senators when Blinken made his claims and confessions. The proposed legislation would provide the government virtually unrestricted authority to monitor and control speech and conduct that occurs online. The measure is intended to target foreign foes; but, it grants the government so broad powers that it would enable the government to ban a wide variety of applications and internet services that are regarded to be dangerous to “national security.” A flagrant violation of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution would occur if the government was given the authority to define what constituted “misinformation” and “disinformation.”

The Constitution of the United States of America protects the fundamental right to free expression. Free speech is essential to the operation of a democratic society and gives individuals the opportunity to voice their opinions without interference. The attempt by the administration of Joe Biden to stifle speech that is critical of the regime is an infringement of this basic freedom. The disturbing tendency of using censorship as a means of controlling the narrative is something that has to be fought against. We have an obligation to defend the right to free speech and push back against any efforts to restrict access to information or stifle critical voices.
