Amazon Launches Drone Deliveries in California and Texas

Drone Deliveries

Amazon has announced the launch of drone deliveries in two towns in California and Texas.

The service, called Prime Air, will allow customers in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas to opt-in for the delivery of packages weighing up to five pounds by drone. The drones will drop off the packages in a customer’s backyard by descending to a safe height and then flying away. Amazon has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration and local officials to implement the service.

The company’s rival, Walmart, has already begun offering drone deliveries of up to ten pounds in six states. In addition to consumer use, drones are being utilized in other industries, such as healthcare and logistics.

Hospitals in Belgium have started using drones to transport human tissue samples between facilities, and FedEx is testing drones with California-based company Elroy Air that can carry up to 500 pounds of cargo over distances of 300 miles.

Amazon has announced the launch of drone deliveries in two towns in California and Texas. Dubbed Prime Air, the service allows customers in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas to opt-in for the delivery of packages weighing up to five pounds by drone.

According to Amazon Air spokesperson Natalie Banke, “Our aim is to safely introduce our drones to the skies. We are starting in these communities and will gradually expand deliveries to more customers over time.” The company has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration and local officials in both Lockeford and College Station to begin the service.

Customers who choose to use Prime Air can expect their packages to be delivered by a drone that will drop them off in their backyard by descending to a safe height and then flying away.

Amazon’s move into drone delivery comes as numerous companies are expanding into the technology. Walmart, one of Amazon’s top competitors, has already begun offering drone deliveries of up to ten pounds in six states: Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

In addition to consumer use, drones are being utilized in other industries as well. Hospitals in Belgium have started using drones to transport human tissue samples between facilities, and FedEx is testing drones with California-based company Elroy Air that can carry up to 500 pounds of cargo over distances of 300 miles.

Overall, the use of drones for delivery purposes looks to be a growing trend, with Amazon’s Prime Air service just the latest example. As companies continue to explore and develop technology, it will be interesting to see how it is utilized in the future.
