After recent war simulations in the waters surrounding Taiwan, the President of China, Xi Jinping, has issued orders for the Chinese military to improve its preparation for “real combat.” During the course of an inspection tour, Jinping issued an order mandating that the Navy of the PLA’s southern theatre command enhance military training and readiness in order to better respond to difficult events in a timely and suitable manner.
This action comes at a time when tensions have been ramped up between China and the United States of America and the Philippines in the South China Sea, where those countries are presently conducting their largest-ever military maneuvers.
The request for increased military preparedness made by Jinping coincides with NATO’s worries that he may feel emboldened to launch a similar attack on Taiwan after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. NATO is concerned that Jinping may feel empowered to launch a similar offensive on Taiwan.
During the course of his tour, President Xi highlighted the need of accelerating the transformation and building of the armed forces, as well as thoroughly boost the degree to which they are modernized. He urged China to “innovate in its concepts and methods of combat” and to increase its capacity to respond to complicated events in a timely and appropriate manner. In addition, he demanded that China strengthen its military’s ability to defend itself.
The Chinese navy recently performed “actual combat training” around Taiwan, which Beijing blamed on a meeting between the President of Taiwan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, Kevin McCarthy.
Zhu Fenglian, the spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, leveled the accusation that Tsai was almost entirely on the side of the United States, which was leading Taiwan into turbulent waters.
Xi has stated that China would steadfastly protect its territorial sovereignty, maritime rights and interests, and will work to aim toward maintaining stability in the areas that are adjacent to China. According to China, the exercises that are taking place surrounding Taiwan are “a serious warning against the collusion and provocation of Taiwan’s independence separatist forces and external forces.”
