Remember the swine flu and prior to it, SARS-CoV-2? well, they would never qualify as a pandemic were it not for the WHO removing keywords from the original definition Pre-2009, the official meaning of a pandemic was actually:

” When a new influenza virus appears against which the human population has no immunity, resulting in several, simultaneous epidemics worldwide with enormous numbers of deaths and illness.”.

So, back in 2009, the WHO better known as the World Health Organization got rid of the severity and high mortality requirements (” enormous numbers of deaths and illness”), leaving behind the distinction of a pandemic as “a worldwide epidemic of a disease.”

By removing the restrictive qualifying criteria of severe illness triggering high morbidity and leaving behind geographically widespread infection as the sole standards with regard to a pandemic, the WHO has the power to proclaim a pandemic AT ANY TIME there are more CASES of a given illness than typical.
