Is Antifa a Threat to Free Speech? Protect Texas Kids Protest Turns Violent

Antifa, which is a loosely united organization that uses tactics to evade simple discovery or affiliation, has once again made headlines for its violent attack on a rally that was otherwise peaceful. This time, the objective was a demonstration called “Protect Texas Kids” that was taking place outside of a venue where a drag show was purportedly about to be held that would involve children.

In the following paragraphs, we will go deeper into the incident, shed light on the campaign led by Antifa to suppress free expression and explore how the group has become a menace to our communities and campuses.

Antifa’s Violent Attack

The event was captured on camera, and it demonstrates how Antifa often resorts to violence in order to suppress individuals who have different ideas. The video shows a small group of individuals affiliated with “Protect Texas Kids” congregating on the opposite side of the street when Antifa appears dressed in its signature all-black attire, complete with helmets and tactical vests. Some members of Antifa were seen carrying pistols in addition to long weapons and other types of firearms. An individual who was subsequently identified as Samuel Fowlkes, 20, approached the demonstrators at about 12:50 p.m. with two other counterprotesters in tow. After having a brief exchange with the demonstrators, the mace was then sprayed in their direction. Fowlkes then attempts to run after refusing to halt while other Antifa members impede police officers, including Christopher Guillott, 33, who is seen waving an umbrella at policemen. This is another move that has become synonymous with Fowlkes. Meghan Grant, who is 37 years old, is also seen racing past cops to join Fowlkes and Guillot before yelling at the people who are in charge of law enforcement.

The Danger Antifa Poses to Free Speech

It should not come as a surprise that Antifa has become a danger to the right to free expression. In point of fact, it has been the “Keyser Soze” of the effort to stifle free expression for a very long time. Antifa’s significant involvement in the anti-free speech movement on a national scale has been exposed in evidence before Congress, despite the denial of its existence by politicians such as Representative Jerry Nadler (Democrat of New York), among others. At its core, Antifa is a movement that is actively opposed to free speech because it views the right to free speech in and of itself as an instrument of oppression.

Antifa’s Handbook

Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, written by Rutgers Professor Mark Bray, is considered to be the “bible” of the Antifa movement. Within this book, the goal of Antifa is made abundantly clear. The difficulties that the campaign against free speech is having are emphasized by Bray: “At the core of the anti-fascist viewpoint is a rejection of the classical liberal expression that states, “I disagree of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it,” “I will defend to the death your right to say it,” “I disapprove of what you say,” and “I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Bray freely admits that “most Americans in Antifa have been anti-authoritarian communists or anarchists… From this vantage point, the concept of ‘free speech’ as such is nothing more than a bourgeois fiction that does not merit attention. It is an illusion that is intended to promote the same things that Antifa is fighting against, such as “white supremacy, hetero-patriarchy, ultra-nationalism, authoritarianism, and genocide.” As a result, all of these opposing personalities have been labeled fascists and are therefore disqualified to have their voices heard. One member of Antifa is quoted by Bray as saying that their stance on free speech can be summed up as a “nonargument… you have the right to speak, but you also have the right to be shut up.”

Democrats’ Dangerous Game

It is troubling that some Democrats have engaged in risky behavior by endorsing or condoning the activities of Antifa. Keith Ellison, who is currently the attorney general of Minnesota and once served as the deputy head of the Democratic National Committee, was quoted as saying that Antifa will “strike fear in the heart” of Trump. This occurred after Antifa had been involved in a number of incidents of violence, and after Germany had placed a ban on the organization’s website. During a previous session, Democratic senators were criticized for failing to unequivocally condemn Antifa and for making the misleading suggestion that the extreme right was the principal instigator of recent violence. In a similar vein, Joe Biden has referred to criticisms leveled against Antifa as “an idea.”
