The Trump-backed candidate defeats Liz Cheney in the Wyoming Republican primary

Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Trump’s most vocal Republican opponent in Congress, lost Tuesday’s primary election to a candidate supported by the former U.S. president, a result that is expected to strengthen Trump’s hold on the voter base.

While the third-term congressman and her supporters knew that Trump’s support for Harriet Hageman offered her a significant boost in the state that he won by the biggest margin in the 2020 elections, they nevertheless started feeling pessimistic about their chances.

Already thinking beyond Capitol Hill, Cheney began considering a candidacy for president in 2024, which may place her back in direct opposition to Trump.

During an address to a small crowd of fans, namely her dad, former vice president Dick Cheney, she framed her defeat as the start of a new chapter in her career in politics.

We still have a long way to go, “she stated on Tuesday night. She subsequently added, “I have maintained since Jan. 6 that I would do whatever it takes to guarantee Donald Trump is never again anyplace close to the Oval Office— and I mean it.” This may have been a subtle hint at a future presidential run.

Liz Cheney’s career is likely over as a result of Wyoming’s unwavering support for Donald Trump.
Nearly 600 km to the east, in Cheyenne, Hageman fans donned cowboy hats, spurs, and denim to celebrate the Western cultural event and rodeo.

These outcomes starkly illustrated the conservative march of the Republican Party in recent years. Her father’s popular appeal and, above everything, his rejection of losing in 2020 has transformed a party formerly controlled by national security-focused, business-friendly conservatives like her father.

As Hageman, a lawyer for the ranching business, erroneously suggested the 2020 election was “fixed,” mirroring Trump’s rhetoric as she pursued Trump supporters.
