U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, and Kelly Tshibaka, a Republican challenger who had Donald Trump’s support, won the Tuesday primary election. In the battle for Alaska’s sole U.S. House seat, Republican Sarah Palin, who is hoping to run for office again after more than ten years, was among the contenders who made it to the general election in November.

Murkowski told reporters earlier in the day that “what counts is winning in November” and that she was confident she would win. The outcomes were dubbed “the very first move in shattering the Murkowski monarchy’s hold on Alaska” by Tshibaka.

Since 1981, Murkowski has controlled the Senate seat; her dad, Frank Murkowski, previously held it first before Lisa Murkowski, who’s held it since mid-2002.

Following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Murkowski was among just seven Republican senators to vote in support of convicting Trump in his second impeachment hearing.

Primary elections have been abolished while the ranked choice vote is now being utilized in general elections in Alaska, thanks to a new election system that was accepted by the electorate. No matter their political affiliation, the top 4 vote-getters together in the democratic primary move onto the general election.

It was too soon to predict who will win the remaining two Senate seats.

In the House primary, Republican Nick Begich, Democrat Mary Peltola, and Sarah Palin all made it to the general election in November. The fourth position couldn’t be called yet. The victor of the election in November will be chosen to serve a two-year term.

In a separate special election, Peltola, Begich, and Palin were vying to complete the term of the late Rep. Don Young, which expires early in the following year. March saw Young’s passing. In a statewide race, this special election was the very first opportunity for voters to use ranked voting. It might not be known who won the special election until at least August 31.

The primary elections for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, governor & lieutenant governor, as well as congressional seats, are on the other half of the ticket from the special election.
