In the latest episode of the political theater that seems more like a reality TV show, former President Donald Trump has taken to his favored platform, Truth Social, to hurl accusations at independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., labeling him as a Democrat “plant” and dismissing him as a “wasted protest vote.”

In a display of rhetorical gymnastics that would impress even the most seasoned spin doctors, Trump unleashed a barrage of insults and conspiracy theories aimed at Kennedy. According to Trump, Kennedy is not just any Democrat, but a “Radical Left Liberal” who has been strategically positioned to aid the reelection efforts of what Trump terms “Crooked Joe Biden, the Worst President in the History of the United States.”

Trump’s diatribe didn’t stop there. He went on to paint Kennedy as the epitome of all things antithetical to his own brand of politics, describing him as “totally Anti-Gun, an Extreme Environmentalist who makes the Green New Scammers look Conservative, a Big Time Taxer and Open Border Advocate, and Anti-Military/Vet…” It seems Trump left no stone unturned in his effort to discredit Kennedy and dissuade voters from considering him as a viable alternative.

But Kennedy, not one to take such attacks lying down, fired back with his own dose of sarcasm and wit. In a social media post dripping with disdain for Trump’s antics, Kennedy quipped, “When frightened men take to social media, they risk descending into vitriol, which makes them sound unhinged.” Ouch. It seems the gloves are off in this social media sparring match.

Kennedy continued his rebuttal by calling for a return to civility and the American tradition of presidential debate. He challenged Trump to face him on the debate stage, confident that his own prowess in the art of debate would prevail over Trump’s bluster.

But will Trump take the bait? Only time will tell if the former president will rise to the challenge or continue his barrage of insults from the safety of his social media echo chamber.

HOT TAKE: Perhaps Trump’s latest tirade is just a desperate attempt to remain relevant in a political landscape that has moved on without him. After all, nothing screams “political has-been” quite like resorting to Twitter feuds and baseless accusations.
