Epic Games Slays Google’s Monopoly: Jury Rules in Favor of Fair Competition

In a legal battle reminiscent of David’s triumph over Goliath, Epic Games secured a significant victory in an antitrust case against Google.

A jury’s decision on Monday concluded that Google wielded “monopoly pwoer” and engaged in anti-competitive behavior through its app store.

Epic Games, renowned for creating Fortnite, accused Google of unfairly stifling competition by imposing steep fees on other game developers who use Google Play to showcase their apps and offerings.

Moreover, Epic leveled allegations against the tech giant, asserting that it unlawfully linked its app store to its payment service, effectively forcing users to utilize Google’s services.

Google has stated intentions to appeal this ruling.

Wilson White, Google’s Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy, responded, stating, “We plan to contest the verdict. Android and Google Play offer more freedom of choice and openness than any other major mobile platform.”

The statement emphasized, “The trial underscored our vigorous competition with Apple and its App Store, as well as other app stores on Android devices and gaming consoles. We are steadfast in defending the Android business model and remain deeply committed to our users, partners, and the broader Android ecosystem.”

Epic Games celebrated the court’s decision, expressing in a blog post, “Today’s verdict marks a triumph for all app developers and consumers worldwide. It demonstrates that Google’s practices within its app store are illegal, leveraging its monopoly to levy excessive fees, stifle competition, and hinder innovation.”

Notably, Google faces similar lawsuits brought forth by the Department of Justice and Rumble, both alleging Google’s monopoly in specific services, including “search and search advertising.”
