Amazon has announced the launch of drone deliveries in two towns in California and Texas.

The service, called Prime Air, will allow customers in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas to opt-in for the delivery of packages weighing up to five pounds by drone. The drones will drop off the packages in a customer’s backyard by descending to a safe height and then flying away. Amazon has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration and local officials to implement the service.

The company’s rival, Walmart, has already begun offering drone deliveries of up to ten pounds in six states. In addition to consumer use, drones are being utilized in other industries, such as healthcare and logistics.

Hospitals in Belgium have started using drones to transport human tissue samples between facilities, and FedEx is testing drones with California-based company Elroy Air that can carry up to 500 pounds of cargo over distances of 300 miles.
