Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, and the University of California, Riverside have developed a technology that allows for the incorporation of mRNA into a variety of plants, including lettuce, tomatoes, and others.

Transgenic and chimeric plants are being developed by scientists through the process of combining the DNA of plants with that of animals and viruses.

The National Science Foundation (NSF), a funding arm of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) whose directors are nominated by the President of the United States, has awarded these researchers a grant in the amount of $500,000 to support their work promoting the use of mRNA in vegetables.
