Social Networks Coordinated with Federal Authorities to Suppress Voices

Recently, Elon Musk, Chief operating officer of SpaceX and Tesla, made a bold move by having released the Twitter Files, which specifies how the social networking site coordinated with federal authorities to suppress voices that did not align with the company’s far-left agenda. The Twitter Files were released in an effort to shed light on how Twitter worked to quiet voices that did not align with the company’s far-left agenda.

What has been overlooked in the majority of these analyses is the role that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) played in this censorship through a consortium known as the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP). The EIP is consisting of four institutions: the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO), the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council, and Graphika, a social media analytics company.

The Electoral Integrity Project (EIP) has released a paper titled “The Long Fuse: Misinformation and the 2020 Election.” This research details how a private-public censorship consortium was established in the summer of 2020 in order to “watch and rectify election misinformation and disinformation.”

During the election cycle in 2020, this censorship network collaborated with the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC), as well as the DHS-backed Elections Infrastructure Information Exchange and Analysis Center (ISAC). It then operated as a technocratic thought police force and forwarded tickets of “mis- and disinformation” to social media firms.

During the election cycles of 2020 and 2022, the EIP built information-sharing portals with Big Tech platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, TikTok, and Reddit; liberal organizations such as the NAACP, Common Cause, and the Democratic National Committee; and Harvard’s Defending Digital Democracy Project, which was co-founded by former Hillary Clinton political consultant Robby Mook. The goal of these portals was to censor domestic “mis- and disinformation.”

They had around 120 analysts who monitored social media for twenty hours each day, sending tickets of disinformation to be suppressed. This censorship shifted its focus to covid vaccinations when they initiated the Virality Project in February 2021.

This government speech monitoring machine and its ability to control the narrative during the 2020 election is detailed in a report that was published by the Foundation for Freedom Online (FFO), a non-profit organization that was founded by Mike Benz. The report was titled “DHS Censorship Agency Had Strange First Mission: Banning Speech That Casts Doubt On ‘Red Mirage, Blue Shift’ Election Events.”

As a result of our analysis, the following seven key numbers have been collated from the speech control partners of the DHS in order to provide a concise summary of the magnitude of the censorship that has been carried out by these partners:

22 million tweets on Twitter that are categorized as “misinformation”

859 Million tweets were gathered in databases with the purpose of analyzing “misinformation”;

120 analysts working up to 20-hour shifts to monitor the “misinformation” spread via social media;

15 technological platforms are analyzed for “misinformation” on a near-constant basis;

A response time of one hour, on average, between government partners and technological platforms;

Dozens of “misinformation narratives” that are going to be throttled throughout the whole platform; and

Because of changes to the “misinformation” policy in the Terms of Service that DHS partners openly plotted and boasted tech companies would never have done without DHS partner insistence and “huge regulatory pressure” from the government, hundreds of millions of individual Facebook posts, YouTube videos, TikToks, and tweets were affected.

CISA, in a nutshell, circumvented ambiguous legislative authorities and violated the First Amendment by contracting out the censoring process to a network of the business sector and civil society partners that shared its worldview.

CISA was established in 2018, and its stated mission was to protect the United States of America from cybersecurity threats posed by hostile foreign countries. However, this mission was swiftly and quietly compromised when a branch of the Department of Homeland Security designated foreign and then domestic disinformation as attacks on critical infrastructure.

Jen Easterly, Biden’s Chief Information Security Advisor (CISA), was quoted as saying, “Building that resilience to misinformation and disinformation, I think, is incredibly important.” “One could argue that we’re in the business of critical infrastructure, and the most critical infrastructure is our cognitive infrastructure,” Easterly said.

To put it another way, every citizen of the United States who spreads what the government labels “misinformation or disinformation” is now committing a cyber assault on essential infrastructure in the United States.
