The Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission in the state of Massachusetts has added four more police officers to its list of those who have been suspended, increasing the total number of officers who have been suspended to 19.
On Tuesday, the commission made this announcement to the public.
The certifications of the officers on the list were revoked in accordance with a state statute that mandates the POST Commission to revoke the certifications of any officers who have been arrested, charged, or indicted for a felony. These suspensions will continue to be in force until the POST Commission reaches a determination about whether or not they should be revoked. According to the news release issued by the commission, an officer’s certification will be removed in the event that they are found guilty of committing a crime.
Two Boston police officers, Michael Murphy and Kendra Conway, who was involved in a scandal involving the department’s overtime compensation have just been added to the list. The issue included the department’s overtime pay. Iancy Gonzalez, a member of the Salem Police Department, is accused of being involved in a plan to fraudulently obtain money orders and has been charged with felony theft. By October 2022, Gonzalez reportedly handed up his resignation, as reported by The Salem News.
According to The Boston Globe, Carlos Vieira, a police officer in Lawrence, was found guilty of raping a kid (Boy) who was 13 years old in 2018 and was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in jail in November of last year.
In 2020, a major police reform bill was passed, and as part of that law, the POST Commission was established with the purpose to develop a mandated certification procedure for police personnel in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is responsible for establishing procedures for decertification, suspension of certification, and the determination of sanctions for specific violations of behavior, among other functions.
