The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning to public health officials regarding the Ebola-like Marburg virus. This comes after two outbreaks of Marburg virus disease (MVD) were confirmed in Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea. The CDC’s health advisory states that officials should increase awareness of the risk of imported cases in the United States.
Marburg virus is a rare but deadly virus that is spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. Symptoms of the Marburg virus include sudden fever, fatigue, headache, unexplained bleeding, gastrointestinal symptoms, muscle and joint pain, and loss of appetite. The disease has a mortality rate of 23-90%, and it can be difficult to diagnose, as many of the signs and symptoms are similar to other infectious diseases.
The World Health Organization warns that the Marburg virus has the potential to become a full-blown epidemic. The virus has a high fatality rate, with five out of eight Tanzanian cases resulting in death. Equatorial Guinea officials reported 14 confirmed cases and 10 deaths in their first outbreak in February 2021.
There is currently no FDA-approved vaccine for the Marburg virus, but early intensive care and fluid replacement can help in treatment. It is crucial for public health officials to be aware of the risk of imported cases, as the Marburg virus can be difficult to diagnose and has the potential for a deadly outbreak.
