On Tuesday, during the symbolic launching of a huge Norway-Denmark-Poland gas pipeline, the president of Poland claimed that the pipeline, known as the Baltic Pipe, will increase Poland’s independence from Russia’s fossil fuel exports.
At an inauguration ceremony for a methane compressor station at Goleniow, in northwest Poland, President Andrzej Duda delivered the remarks. Also in attendance were the prime ministers of Poland and Denmark, Mateusz Morawiecki & Mette Frederiksen.
Andrzej Duda highlighted the fact that Poland will no longer have to rely only on gas imported from Russia because of the pipeline.
“It has become so evident in the present scenario, where this, in Poland, everyone can witness an event that even the most pessimists could not expect, namely that at one time Russia would just shut off the gas faucet,” Andrzej Duda stated.
According to EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, “The Baltic Pipe is an important project for the supply security of the area and the consequence of an EU policy effort to diversify supplies of gas,” according to a statement released by the European Commission. An important part of easing the present energy crisis will be played by the pipeline.
A total of 267 million Euros were contributed to the project by the European Union.
The pipeline will allow PGNiG, Poland’s natural gas utility, to import a minimum of 6.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas in 2023. What this implies is that the corporation will use at least 80% of the available capacity in the pipeline. PGNiG predicted in a statement released on Tuesday that gas supplies will increase by more than 1 bcm in 2024.
Norway & PGNiG Upstream Norway have inked contracts that will see natural gas imported to Poland through the Baltic Pipe.
Poland’s Gaz-System and Denmark’s Energinet partnered together to create the Baltic Pipe. The actual launch of the investment will occur this coming Saturday, therefore the event on Tuesday was only symbolic. (PAP)
