Guarantees of Safety for Ukraine Provoked a Response from Moscow

Ekraine wants Guarantees of Safety

Ukraine’s committee wants Guarantees of Safety for Ukraine, founded by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has suggested a bloc “in the vein of NATO” that can be quickly summoned to protect borders with Russia.

U.S. and other NATO partners’ provision of “security assurances” to Ukraine would be a key component. Officials in Kiev emphasized that the idea is not intended as a substitute for NATO, but rather as a legally enforceable alliance to remain in place while Ukraine ultimately seeks permanent NATO membership, as described by Newsweek.

As Ukraine seeks full membership in NATO, the Kyiv Security Compact (KSC), suggested by Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office, and recently departed NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, would set up a “multi-decade” strategy of invested capital, for military training, or information sharing and to beef up Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

The Kremlin has responded angrily, with Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s security council, calling it “a prelude to the Third-World War” if it is implemented. He said that the eventual outcome would be a nuclear inferno.
