Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has strongly criticized the coordinated bombing by the United States and the United Kingdom on multiple Houthi targets in Yemen. Erdogan accuses Washington and LOndon of dangerously escalating tensions in the region, warning of the potential transformation of the Red Sea into a “bloodbath.”.

In a recent development, the US and UK conducted deliberate strikes on more than 60 targets across 16 Iranian-backed Houthi militant locations, as confirmed by US officials. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak justified the military action, emphasizing its necessity and proportionality to safeguard global shipping routes in the troubled region.

Houthi Threats and and Iranian Backing.

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels, claiming responsiblity for numerous attacks on ships in the Red Sea, have pledged further assaults on vessels transporting cargo to Israel. The rebels’ aggressive actions have resulted in the attack or seizure of 27 different vessels in the Southern Red Sea, according to Pentagon reports.

Erdogan’s Critique: Disproportionate Use of Force.

Erdogan, addressing reporters in Istanbul, deemed the bombing campaign a “disproportionate use of force.” He revealed insights from various intelligence channels, suggesting that Houthi forces were mounting a “successful defense” against the US and UK. However, Erdogan did not provide specific details about the nature of the alleged Houthi response.

Houthi Stand and Connection with Gaza.

In late October, the Houthi rebels expressed solidarity with Gaza during Israel’s prolonged bombardment of the enclave. This solidarity led to a series of attacks on Red Sea ships, prompting several shipping companies to reroute their vessels around Africa. Consequently, this shift has resulted in increased prices and insurance costs for shipping.

Pentagon’s Precision Strikes and Targeted Locations.

The Pentagon, in a Thursday statement, outlined its precision strikes, targeting radar systems, drone sites, missile facilities, and Houthi command centers. The reported damage extended to the captial, Sanaa, as well as the Red Sea port of Hodeidah, Dhamar, and the northwestern Houthi stronghold of Saada.

Human Cost and International Reactions.

A Houthi spokesman disclosed that five members lost their lives in the bombings, while another six sustained injuries. THe international community has witnessed a divide in reactions, with the Kremlin condemning the “illegal” nature of the US-UK attacks in Yemen.
