Biden Puts a Hold on Natural Gas Projects, Cites Urgency in Tackling Climate Crisis

In response to the alleged climate change crisis and recent extreme weather events, the Biden administration has chosen to halt all natural gas projects.

As reported by Reuters on Friday, Biden has temporarily suspended the approval process for both pending and upcoming requests to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) from new projects.

This decision might delay the determination on new facilities, including the CP2 facility proposed for the southwest coast of Louisiana, until after the November 5 election.

During this pause, the Department of Energy (DOE) will conduct an assessment to evaluate the “economic and ecological consequences” of proposed projects aimed at exporting LNG to Europe and Asia, where there is currently high demand for this fuel.

ENergy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, in a teleconference with reporters, indicated that the review process would extend over several months.

Biden, in a statement, underscored the significance of this decision, emphasizing the devastating impact of climate change on people worldwide. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis and its efforts to transition away from fossil fuels.

“My Administration is announcing today a temporary pause on pending decisions of Liquefied Natural Gas exports– with the exception of unanticipated and immediate national security emergencies. During this period, we will take a hard look at the impacts of LNG exports on energy costs, America’s energy security, and and our environment. This pause on new LNG approvals sees the climate crisis for what it is: the existential threat of our time,” stated President Biden.

The administration’s reconsideration of these projects aligns with Joe Biden’s broader climate agenda and anticipation of a challenging reelection campaign, appealing to younger voters increasingly concerned about climate change and environmental issues, according to sources.

Bloomberg reported that environmentalists view projects like Venture Global LNG Inc.’s CP2 export terminal as a litmus test of the president’s commitment to addressing climate change.

The pause in permits could affect more than a dozen proposals awaiting reveiw at the Energy Department, including ventures planned in Louisiana by Commonwealth LNG and Energy Transfer LP.

This decision is politically sensitive for Biden, requiring a delicate balance of competing priorities. A months-long review would effectively delay decisions on additional LNG exports until after the November 5 presidential election.

Environmentalists, such as Bill McKibben, have pressed Biden to shift course on LNG, considering it a pivotal issue for his climate record in the upcoming election.

Trump Campaign Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a statement criticizing Biden’s decision, while Speaker Mike Johnson labeled it as “outrageous” and detrimental to U.S. energy security.
